hildegardavon:George Barbier (also Edward W. Larry), 1882-1932Bacchanale, early Art Deco, 1923, gouachePrivate Collection (x) Considered one of the great masters and early progenitors of Art Deco, George Barbier produced a number of exquisite illustrations, costume designs, set designs and other artworks that were highly regarded in the 1910s and 1920s. Dubbed the “Knights of the Bracelet” for their flamboyant and irrepressible ways, Barbier and his peers such as Paul Iribe, who played a major role in the L'Exposition international des arts décoratifs et industrials moderns in 1925 had an enormous influence on the decorative arts and theater. This marvelous example of his work depicts a nude woman nominally clothed in a diaphanous robe, with an Art Deco garland over her shoulder, accompanied by a nude youth and another female figure playing the cymbals in the background. This pochoir maintains its original, highly elaborate silver-toned frame. (Dimensions include frame.). -- source link
