variablejabberwocky:hosasoh:gifthetv:What Wildest Dreams Gets Wrong About Africa | MTV NewsA couple of things to add because I’ve realized throughout my very short life even when you say there are ‘54 African countries,’ many still don’t seem to grasp what that actually means (also, post not directed at Chescaleigh (which, btw, thank you for this video!), but to the people who don’t know squat when it comes to this beautiful continent AKA super privileged yet incredibly ignorant people). When it comes to the CONTINENT of AFRICA, which is made up of 54 SEPARATE COUNTRIES, here are some important things to remember: 1,250 to 2,100, and by some counts over 3,000, languages are spoken natively in AfricaIt is estimated that they are 3,000 tribes in Africa (though the number is said to be much larger) Definition of a tribe: “tribe is defined as an ethnic group that shares common history, culture and nature.” That means over 3,000 tribes share a common history, culture, nature and people(s). What should that mean to you? DIVERSITYhow so? There are over A BILLION PEOPLE that live in those 54 countries in the CONTINENT OF AFRICA that are (generally) a part of 3,000+ tribes/clans that speak 2,000+ DIFFERENT languagesWOWNow, let’s breakdown the ethnic groups that make up the CONTINENT OF AFRICA, which consists of 54 SEPARATE COUNTRIES: The following ethnic groups number 10 million people or more: Arabic, speaking groups: ca. 180 million. • Arab, up to ca. 100 million• Berber ca. 65 millionHausa in Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Chad, Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire and Sudan (ca. 30 million)Yoruba in Nigeria and Benin (ca. 30 million)Oromo in Ethiopia and Kenya (ca. 30 million)Igbo in Nigeria and Cameroon (ca. 30 million)Akan in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire (ca. 20 million)Amhara in Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti (ca. 20 million)Somali in Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya (ca. 15-17 million)Ijaw in Nigeria (ca. 14 million)Kongo in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and Republic of the Congo (ca. 10 million)Fula in Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Benin,Niger, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Ghana, Chad, Sudan, Togo and Côte d'Ivoire (ca. 10 million) Shona in Zimbabwe and Mozambique (ca. 10 million) Zulu in South Africa (ca. 10 million)Geography of the CONTINENT OF AFRICA: “Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator.Africa has eight major physical regions: the Sahara, theSahel, the Ethiopian Highlands, the savanna, the Swahili Coast, the rain forest, the African Great Lakes, and Southern Africa. Some of these regions cover large bands of the continent, such as the Sahara and Sahel, while others are isolated areas, such as the Ethiopian Highlands and the Great Lakes. Each of these regions has unique animal and plant communities.” YOU KNOW ANYWHERE ON PLANET EARTH THAT HAS THAT KIND OF MAGICAL PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY?!!?!!! Biodiversity of the CONTINENT OF AFRICA: “Africa is home to some one quarter of theworld’s 4,700 mammal species, including79 species of antelope. It also has morethan 2,000 species of birds – one fifthof the world’s total – and at least 2,000species of fish, alongside 950 amphibianspecies. The African mainland harboursbetween 40,000 and 60,000 plant speciesand about 100,000 known species ofinsects, spiders and other arachnids. Eightof the world’s 34 biodiversity hotspots arein Africa.”WOW WOW Lastly, the names of those 54 COUNTRIES that make up the CONTINENT OF AFRICA are as follows: AlgeriaAngolaBeninBotswanaBurkina FasoBurundiCabo VerdeCameroonCentral African RepublicChadComorosCongo, Republic of theCongo, Democratic Republic of theCote d'IvoireDjiboutiEgyptEquatorial GuineaEritreaEthiopiaGabonGambiaGhanaGuineaGuinea-BissauKenyaLesothoLiberiaLibyaMadagascarMalawiMaliMauritaniaMauritiusMoroccoMozambiqueNamibiaNigerNigeriaRwandaSao Tome and PrincipeSenegalSeychellesSierra LeoneSomaliaSouth AfricaSouth SudanSudanSwazilandTanzaniaTogoTunisiaUgandaZambiaZimbabweSources: http://www.saylor.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Ethnic-groups-in-Africa.pdfhttps://www.countries-ofthe-world.com/countries-of-africa.htmlhttp://education.nationalgeographic.com/encyclopedia/africa-physical-geography/https://www.cbd.int/iyb/doc/celebrations/iyb-egypt-state-of-biodiversity-in-africa.pdfhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Africahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_groups_of_Africahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa -- source link
