annielefroy:THE ILOVAISKY FAMILY: SONS OF THE DONThe first known settlements in the upper reaches of Kalmius were formed by representatives of the Ilovaisky family at the end of the XVIII century. This is proven by Ivan Mikhailovich Sulin, a historian who conducted large-scale research work in the archives of the Don Cossak Host Province that were still available at the beginning of the XX century. The first famous Ilovaisky, Andrei Ivanovich, was a military sergeant, took part in the March on Moscow in the homeguard troops of Prokopiy Lyapunov and was married to a Georgian princess. Osip Andreievich, his son was also a military foreman. Mokei Osipovich Ilovaysky settled on the Don at the end of the XVII century, was enlisted in the Don Army and showed his worthiness in the battles against the Crimean Khan Mengli-Giray under the command of Prince Golitsyn. Mokei’s son, Ivan Mokeievich was also a sergeant, in the 1720s participated in military operations in the Caucasus. He spent seven years in captivity among the Circassians, suffered for refusing to accept Islam and, after two unsuccessful attempts, escaped, according to family legend, miraculously.ㅤㅤAlexei Ivanovich Ilovaysky participated in the Seven Years’ War in the rank of a centurion. He performed feats of bravery before the battle of Cahul: on July 18, 1770, he defeated a Turkish cavalry detachment, almost took the Grand Vizier prisoner, and soon became an agent and friend of Prince Potemkin. His serene Highness the Prince in 1774 instructed Alexei to attack the Pugachev’s gang, which was heading for the Voronezh province. Alexei Ivanovich managed to overtake and seize Pugachev. For this, he was promoted to Colonel of the Army on February 15, 1775, appointed a military ataman and awarded by Empress Catherine. Dmitri Ivanovich, brother of Alexei Ivanovich and son of Ivan Mokeievich, is directly related to populating of land belonging to his ancestors, in the upper reaches of Kalmius. He is the founder of the Zuevka settlement, located in Taganrog district. Also, one of the settlements was named Makeievka in honour of his grandfather Mokei Osipovich. Although Dmitri Ivanovich had seven sons (Pavel, Ivan, Grigory, Timofei, Vasily, Stepan and Peter) Makeievka was inherited by the third of them.Grigory Dmitrievich, along with his brothers, participated not only in the Patriotic War (1812) but also in The Foreign Campaign of the Russian Army (1813-1815). Introducing the Ilovaisky brothers to the Prussian king, Emperor Alexander I said, not without pride: “This is how the Dons serve me: a father has seven sons, and all of them are present here.” -- source link
