Bacchic Dance (1906). André Derain (French, 1880-1954). Watercolor and pencil on paper. MoMA.Derain arrived at l’Estaque in August 1906. He wrote to Matisse: “The landscapes here are very pretty. The light is brighter than at Collioure ,but equally soft…” Derain painted 15 works at l’Estaque, for the most part landscapes whose contours he mapped, simplifying natural forms to produce complex compositions. -- source link
