librarycompany:It’s #ManuscriptMonday featuring marginalia, monsters and mystery! This manuscript is a bit of a Library Company mystery. We have records indicating that we received the Greek volume in 1799 as a gift from Henry Hamilton Cox. The volume came into Cox’s possession from his grandfather, Sir Richard Cox, Lord Chancellor of Ireland in 1703-1707. However, the manuscript wasn’t accessioned until the 1830s when John Jay Smith was the Library Company’s librarian. This is most likely the same time the manuscript was rebound. Researching these mysteries is one of the delights of special collections. The life of the book is as important as its contents, the dragon agrees.Palladius. Historia Lausiaca in Greek. 14th Century.
