affinityforanime:affinityforanime:So there was a card that was posted to the Magic Arena Reddit today called Arni Brokenbrow. IT’S FAKE! Let me explain how I know this. I’ve been designing custom Magic cards since 2013 and I have a background in graphic design, typography and style guides. So I have developed a sharp eye for when people don’t know how to properly format or phrase the text of their custom cards to match how Wizards does it. All you have to do is look at the text formatting for “formidable.” You can see that if Arni was a real card, “boast” should be italicized and ability keywords don’t have reminder text in parenthesis. It’s an obvious, low-effort fake. @polkadotsorsquirrels The problem with your theory is that you’re confusing an ability word with a keyword. Let me show you what I mean because it’s a bit technical. Formidable is an ability word while Escape and Suspend are keywords. These are formatted very differently. For your theory to hold water, we’d have to assume that Boast is a keyword. However, that doesn’t work because we can see that the formatting is wrong for Boast to be a keyword. Keywords formatted this way don’t have spaces between the m-dash and the mana cost nor do they have a colon after the mana cost. The other problem is that if Boast is a keyword, everything after the cost needs to be reminder text in parenthesis. So whoever designed this card has created a bizarre blend of a keyword and an ability word with the wrong text formatting for both. @corporalotherbear I had not considered forecast, but you’re right. Thanks for pointing that out.In this case, the text formatting is correct. My confidence that this is a fake card has significantly decreased. However, if Arni is a real card and Boast is a real keyword… it’s really weird. So many limitations and memory issues on the mechanic was another reason I was confident that it was fake since it didn’t seem like it had very deep design space. It feels like the kind of mechanic that someone who had just made their first custom card would think up. Wizards usually keeps things much cleaner and less wordy. -- source link
