Sterling’s last gasp - the SAR-87 assault rifleA pair of early production SAR-87 prototypes, designed and produced at Sterling Armaments in 1987. The SAR-87 was largely based on the earlier SAR-80, which itself was a derivative of the AR-18. The SAR-pattern rifles were designed to be simple and affordable; they operated on a basic gas-operated action with a rotating bolt and an adjustable gas cylinder to facilitate for different types of 5.56mm ammunition. A 9mm conversion kit was also planned. Less than 100 rifles were made before Sterling finally hit bankruptcy in 1988, and the SAR-87 was shortly thereafter cancelled. In these early models, the fore-ends are made from hollowed-out wood and feature a detachable carrying handle. Thanks to the Royal Armouries National Firearms Center for allowing me to examine and photograph these rifles. -- source link
