The Love Letter. John Graham Gilbert (British, 1794-1866). Oil on canvas.Gilbert was the son of a West India merchant named Graham. When aged 24, he came to London, and having entered the schools of the Royal Academy, gained, in 1821, a Gold Medal for painting. He spent two years in Italy studying the Old Masters. He returned to London, going in 1827 to Edinburgh. He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830. -- source link
