Snow in the desertThe Sahara is not renowned for precipitation, so when snow fell near the Algerian town of Ain Sefra where the desert meets the Atlas mountains (normally one of the globe’s warmest places) some days ago it provoked a flurry of attention and brought us these lovely satellite photos (with the NASA one being a LANDSAT image draped over a radar based elevation model originally takenby the space shuttle). The fall amounted to between 10 and 30 cm at altitudes above 1000 metres and it lasted just long enough for some locals to enjoy sliding down dunes on improvised sledges. It was the third recorded fall in the last 37 years.LozImage credit: 1: NASA 2: Copernicus Sentinel/ESAhttps://go.nasa.gov/2rlRJ0thttp://bit.ly/2Beu2GY -- source link
