luniara:It has been quite some time since I began my journey with these pieces. The feeling is not nearly as harsh as it used to be when you first started following me in this 9/11 piece journey. There is some small sense of peace this year, but yet…there’s still that numbness plaguing me in the back of my subconscious… reminding me that I have to mourn and I have to be sad for the loss of my sister. A tear forms and I can say “but I’m not sad?”, but my body knows that deep inside, I have a reason to be. After illustrating the 9/11 comic, I think expressing my near exact memories of those days truly helped me cope, which is why this piece is exhibiting so much peace. I was told it is very much unlike the others. In a way, it was also inspired by my Father. He always thought my sister, even though she was his step child. I’d like to think she’d extend her hand out to him in a welcoming way, as she would anyone (the sigh in annoyance because he would talk her brain off). Her back is turned because…well, maybe I won’t have to do this anymore. Maybe this is the last piece, or maybe she wants me to move on and stop putting myself through a emotional rollercoaster. I don’t know exactly, but I definitely know there is SOME peace to this. NOT so much closure…but the intense anger and sadness has ebbed to the blessings that are my two beautiful children. I’d also like to invite you to reflect on how this day makes you feel. Like always, thank you for being here. So many of you check in on me every year and it means the world to me.
