The Terrace of the Lions . ⚫Located in the island of Delos one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. ⚫The lions are faced East towards the Sacred Lake of Delos where it’s believed the greek sun god Apollo had been born. ⚫The original row probably contained 12 stone lions that were built around 600 BCE by the people of Naxos in honor of the god Apollo. ⚫The five remaining lion statues are marble replicas, and the actual figures have been moved to the Archaeological Museum of Delos. ⚫The lions, with their mouths open as if roaring or snarling, were meant to guard the sanctuaries and to inspire a feeling of divine fear among the worshippers. ⚫The way in which they were positioned is similar to the way sphinxes were set up along avenues in ancient Egypt. ⚫Delos was included in the UNESCO World’s Cultural Heritage list of Cultural Landscapes and Archaeological Remains in 1990. . .
