It happened prior to the completion of Starkiller Base, on board the Finalizer, in the middle of Hux’s scheduled sleep cycle. Per his routine, he remained awake and in his sitting area, dressed for sleep yet nowhere close to experiencing it. Silk robe over loose pajama pants, lukewarm tea within reach, youngling loth-cat purring on his lap, datapad with a backlog of administrative work glowing in the dim. Quiet. No different from any other sleep cycle in his career as a general in the First Order, dealing with a bottomless inbox of reports–giving and receiving. His lack of hobbies and his ability to power through long hours kept him energized and focused at this time, so when his door slid open without a hailing signal preceding it Hux tensed in his seat.Kylo Ren, helmeted and fully armored, lumbered over the threshold and into Hux’s bedroom. No acknowledgements. No apologies for interrupting Hux’s work or invading his private space. No body language to indicate even a simple nod of greeting. Agitating behavior at best, but what struck Hux above anything else was the knight’s calm demeanor and the casualness with which Kylo entered Hux’s quarters like they were his own. Therefore Hux waited on his couch and sipped his tea. Kylo, he knew, had recently rejoined the Finalizer after completing a mission for Supreme Leader Snoke. He thought at first Kylo had mistaken Hux’s quarters for his own. Once he realized the error, he’d leave without a word and expect Hux to dismiss the entire episode.Hux sipped more tea, and waited. Repeated. In minutes he emptied his cup, then went to investigate. Kylo was sitting on the bed with his bare back to Hux, having removed nearly every stitch of clothing. He folded the last of it, what looked like an undershirt, and placed it with the rest on a nearby chair. Stretched his long arms above his head. Sighed out in a heavy voice. Slipped under the sheets and onto his back, eyes closed and fingers twined on his chest. For kriff’s sake. “Ren, what in all the stars are you–”“Get in,” Kylo cut in.“I have work to finish.” Not the smartest comeback; Hux accepted that. Get out . He ought to have said that first. Never pull this stunt again. Yet when Kylo turned his head and opened his eyes, it rooted Hux to the spot. He thought at first Kylo might attempt a Force trick, commanding him to get into bed. He expected darkness in Kylo’s stare, impatience. Yet Kylo’s face bore no true expression, only slack features and a straight line for a mouth.“There will always be work to finish,” Kylo said. “Sacrificing sleep will not lighten your workload, but extend the time required to correctly perform your job. It’s not gone unnoticed that fatigue is catching up with you on the bridge and elsewhere on the Finalizer. ”Kylo then sat up in bed. The sheet fell away to expose the hard planes of Kylo’s smooth chest. Smooth everywhere but the man’s nipples, hard and tight and of course where Hux focused first.“Our Supreme Leader has noticed,” Kylo told him. “He ordered me to ensure you use your sleep cycles as intended.”Hux folded his arms and willed back his bravado. “You could have sent a message reminding me to sleep.”“Get. In.” Kylo scowled. “I am also tired.”“Fine.” Hux then barked out, “Lights to five percent,” and the room turned dark. He discarded his robe, slipped in beside Kylo, and lay on his side. Best to get the rest of the sleep cycle behind him, then promise to adhere to schedules going forward. Kylo, having satisfied Snoke’s request, would return to his own quarters and they’d never speak of this night.Hux closed his eyes, confident he’d correctly predicted the outcome of Kylo’s visit. He got one thing wrong when Kylo edged closer and spooned him. READ ON AO3 -- source link
