CAFFEINE INTAKE DURING RAMADAN Have you ever paid attention to how many cups of coffee you drink during Ramadan? Black coffee? Arabic coffee? Have you ever struggled with your sleep during and after Ramadan? I’ve been asked by one of my super intelligent followers to talk about caffeine intake during Ramadan and the effects coffee might have. Here’s information from the Canadian and Australian Ministries of Health about daily recommended caffeine intake: no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day —the equivalent of 4 cups (945 ml) of brewed coffee or roughly 5 espresso coffees per day. This is maximum which is recommended, the optimum caffein intake is however individual-specific. I used to believe that Arabic coffee is as strong as a black one, however when I made my research, I found out that a study showed that a single cup of Arabic coffee contains 4mg of caffeine.* Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, and individuals who habitually drink caffeine-contained beverages may develop a physical, emotional, and psychological dependence on it and may experience a caffeine withdrawal syndrome after abrupt cessation of caffeine intake. It is quickly eliminated, with a typical half-life of four to six hours. Caffeine produces a variety of physiological effects on the cerebral vascular system, blood pressure, respiratory functioning, gastric and colonic activity, urine volume, and exercise performance. Low to moderate doses of caffeine (20 mg-200 mg) produce reports of increased well-being, happiness, energy, alertness, and sociability, whereas higher doses are more likely to produce symptoms of anxiety, jitteriness, and upset stomach.** That said, try to monitor your caffeine intake during Ramadan, and try to stop boosting yourself with coffee 4-6 hours before going to sleep. Recommended intake does not equal healthy.
