Moeraki BouldersThese spherical boulders on Koekohe Beach in New Zealand are alleged by Maori legends to be the remains of eel baskets that have been washed ashore from a canoe wreck. The boulders are made up of mud and clay that has been held together (cemented) by calcite. The cracks seen in the image on the boulders are known as septaria, and radiate out over the boulder due to its hollow core. The boulders range in size from 0.5-2.2m in diameter and are spherical. They were created by the cementation by calcite of the Moeraki formation’s mudstone that dates to the Paleocene. Due to coastal erosion the boulders are exhumed from their bedding in the mudstone.~SAhttp://bit.ly/1N1XUXd by Karsten Sperling -- source link
