gffa: I KEEP COMING BACK TO THIS LINE.One of the things that both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith established is that the Jedi weren’t able to use the Force very well, because there was too much darkness, it’s clouding the future, they can’t see things very well, it’s even directly stated by Mace: “I think it is time to inform the Senate that our ability to use the Force is diminished.”There are several mentions of how the Dark Side is quicker, easier, how it’s the path to suffering. That famous line of Yoda’s in TPM, “Fear is the path to the dark side… fear leads to anger… anger leads to hate.. hate leads to suffering.” So it seems like, well, the Jedi don’t want anything to do with the Dark Side, right? That means the Jedi are of the Light Side, right? But I can never find any mention of this in Immovable Canon (aka, the things that George himself was directly involved with).“It’s obvious, though! You can pick up any game or picture book or anything and it will say RIGHT THERE that the Jedi are the Light Side!” (From an interview with George Lucas.)“Well, it’s ALL OVER the novels and comics and there was this thing called the Force Wars in comics and novels that–” LUCAS: “I don’t read that stuff. I haven’t read any of the novels. I don’t know anything about that world. That’s a different world than my world.” So, I think about that, about setting aside everything Legends or merchandise would tell me, because those are different things, they’re not connected with the Immovable History of Star Wars for this question. And then I come back to, “You were supposed to bring balance to the Force!” and how that means the Force must have been out of balance, which is that there was too much darkness, but I’m not sure there’s anything that specifically says the Jedi aren’t about both Light and Dark, that balance means to them to have those two things both present, but in healthy balance with each other.Obi-Wan says that Anakin was meant to destroy the Sith, not the Dark Side. (As the Sith are canonically a corruption of the Force.)Obi-Wan doesn’t say to bring the Force back to the Light Side, but to bring balance to it.Idk, the more I turn it over, the more I’m starting to wonder if the canon itself meant that the Jedi weren’t about one side over the other, but instead their aim was for harmony of both. That the galaxy was out of balance is the point of why they couldn’t sense the future, why their vision was clouded, why so many things and people were able to hide from them, but I can’t think of anything that says they wanted Only The Light Side. The “Light Side” is never really even mentioned as far as I can find.(This sets aside that Disney canon is more complicated and attitudes may have shifted since George left, but I’m currently focusing on stuff he was involved with, to try to get at the original intentions of the Balance of the Force.) -- source link
