#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 12 April • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1718, Blackbeard burns the merchant ship Protestant Caesar. The Queen Anne’s Revenge came upon the merchant ship on the morning of April 8, riding at anchor off the bay of Honduras with her holds half-filled with freshly cut logwood. When Capt Wyer spotted “a large ship and a sloop with black flags and deaths heads and three more sloops with bloody flags,” he called his men on deck to ask his men if they were willing to defend the ship from attackers. Wyer attested that his men answered “if they were Spaniards they would stand by him as long as they had life, but if they were pirates they would not fight.” When it became clear that these were the same ships they had encountered the month prior, now sailing in concert with the infamous Blackbeard, Capt. Wyer and his men quickly abandoned ship. They hid for three days in the jungle foliage and piles of logwood on shore. Blackbeard sent a messenger to find Wyer, stating that if they surrendered peacefully they would not be harmed. Deciding to trust the messenger, Wyer and his men surrendered and were taken to Blackbeard. Blackbeard thanked them for obliging his request but informed them that he had to burn the Protestant Caesar nonetheless, as it sailed from Boston and must be destroyed in revenge “for executing the six pirates” who had survived the Cape Cod shipwrecks that claimed the life of Sam Bellamy and most of his crew. On the morning of the 12th, Blackbeard’s men went aboard the Protestant Caesar and set her alight, logwood and all. True to his word, he released Wyer and his men unharmed; they all eventually made it back to Boston. . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #pirates #piracy #piratesofthecaribbean #historyofpirates #blackbeard #queenannesrevenge #protestantcaesar #honduras #pirateship #edwardteach https://www.instagram.com/p/CcVOD_TL7ru/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI= -- source link
