isohels:i-was-a-naive-antifeminist:sheildmaiden13:i-was-a-naive-antifeminist:Obstetric violence is institutional violence. Break the silence. You’re not going to like this but I’m going to go ahead anyways the doctor delivering the baby wouldn’t do an episiotomy if it wasn’t an emergency. The doctor gave one because the baby had to come out right then. For the baby’s sake and their wellbeing. The baby goes through stress when they’re in the birth canal and if there’s a chance the baby could hurt or low on oxygen then the doctor is going to perform an episiotomy. At that whether or not you like it that baby is more important than you and you’re going to get sewn up anyways. You should be grateful that the episiotomy prevented damage to your child and the child’s brain. When you go into the hospital to give birth and you sign consent forms. Part of what you consent to is emergency treatment including an episiotomy because you’re consenting to treatment for TWO individuals. If there’s an emergency the doctors are going to do what they can to save the baby including an emergency caesarian or an episiotomy. When they do emergency things like that it’s not all about you. It’s about your baby too. The doctors will take care of you but they will make damn sure your baby comes out safely and as unstressed put as possible. This is exactly the kind of mentality that this photoset is bringing attention to and that needs to stop.1) The doctor doesn’t always do the best thing for you. Many doctors are driven by money and will do whatever it is will get them the most money, whether it’s performing unnecessary procedures or taking shortcuts to save time. There are many selfish doctors out there.2) The baby is never more important than the pregnant person’s consent. What the fuck. Until the umbilical cord is cut, the baby is a part of the pregnant person, and the pregnant person’s bodily autonomy comes first. This is really fucking basic. How dare you say that the baby is more important than the pregnant woman. -- source link
