31/8/16: Canna ‘Picasso’Cannas are great. In a cool temperate climate with limited space, it’s nice to have something that you can store in potato form over winter. Rhizomes and tubers are perfect for an exotic summer display with minimal effort. They are traditionally grown in the ground in herbaceous borders and lifted to store over winter, but I’ve grown this in a (not very big) container, and fed it a few times per month with a seaweed fertiliser. And here we are, flowers. The yellow parts seem to bleach to white in the sun, but that doesn’t diminish their impressiveness, as the orange stays intense. This variety is compact too, so the flowers can be enjoyed at about 3′ from the ground. -- source link
