Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art I’m never sure what to do with art to wear (which is often art that you really can’t wear because it would be difficult to move in) and now there is a new category called costume as contemporary art, much of which does not seem intended to be worn at all. In any case, I thought I would tell you about this show at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, so you can figure it out for yourself. The show running through August 14th, 2022 is offering what it calls “the first global survey exhibition dedicated to the use of clothing as a medium of visual art.” Which means it has some 35 artists showing 60 works, and it is going to use “the language of fashion to challenge traditional divisions of form and function, cast a critical eye on the construction of gender, advance political activism, and address cultural difference.” So there you go.
