Small things that irk Jin Don’t get me wrong, I thought the episodes are stunningly animated and I enjoyed the story, but … The genderswap of Vaatu and Raava annoyed me throughout the episode. Yin-Yang Yin is characterized as slow, soft, yielding, diffuse, cold, wet, and passive; and is associated with water, earth, the moon, femininity and nighttime. Yang, by contrast, is fast, hard, solid, focused, hot, dry, and aggressive; and is associated with fire, sky, the sun, masculinity and daytime. They played it very straight up Yin-Yang with those two spirits i.e. light and dark who are part of a whole and cannot exist without the other. They even flat-out show a Yin-Yang symbol at the end of the episode. Which made the switched voices even more grating to me. I do not see any narrative point that was made by doing so, all it’s doing is bending a Taoist idea to what a western audience expects. I do not like the part where shadows=evil for exactly the same reason. Image source: One -- source link
