thepompandcircumstance: HM Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom, Empress of India and her sister HIM Empress Maria Feodorovna of the Russian Empire. Princess Alexandra of Denmark, nicknmed “Alix”, married the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward [later King Edward VII] in 1863 after the scrutiny and approval of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter and German empress Victoria. Their marriage wasn’t completely devoted, however, as Prince Albert Edward would have a many number of affairs both before and during his reign. In 1864, Princess Dagmar of Denmark, fondly called “Minnie” was once engaged to the Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich but he died of meningitis the following year. “Nixa”, as he was called, intended for his younger brother Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich [the future Alexander III] to take her hand in his stead. The couple then became know as the Tsesarevich and Tsesarevna of Russia. The sisters were very close and often spent time together at each other’s company. After the death of Aleksandr III, Alix and her husband would spend time at Russia at her behest. After the 1917 assassination of Dagmar’s son Tsar Nicholas II and his family at the hand of the Bolsheviks, Alexandra’s son George V sent for his aunt to be fetched aboard a British warship to stay in England. -- source link
