heysawbones: aight suits have come up a lot today. let me try to cobble this together real quick men’s suits look simple from a distance but they’re actually pretty complicated. this is partly due to the complexity of their task (make any man look good!), and partly due to the length of their evolution i am not going to pretend an artist needs to be persnickety about Suit Rules, we’ve all probably got better things to do with our time, but there are some basic things one ought not to screw up in order to be passably convincing SUIT JACKETS ARE NOT WAIST LENGTH. The bottom of the jacket is at least sleeve-length, usually about a palm’s length longer. It’s not unusual for the hem to land at the bottom of the crotch - where the pants split into right and left legs. KNOW HOW TO DRAW A REAL LAPEL. Lapels are those foldy-outy bits on your coat collars. Some outerwear lapels even button across the coat to protect you from the elements. There’s a LOT of varieties of lapels, though they can be roughly sorted into 3 types. The most common type is the notched lapel. If you don’t want to learn about the other ones, that’s fine. Just make sure you learn that one. Remember that the notch is in the upper third of the lapel, not in the center. TIE KNOTS SIT FLUSH WITH THE COLLAR. THE COLLAR IS FLUSH WITH THE NECK. for some reason a lot of people’s Babby’s First Suit drawings have these loose dress collars with a neck gap, and then the tie is drawn so it appears loose around said loose collar. You can see the portion of the tie that goes around the neck, coming out of the knot. You shouldn’t be able to see that - you should only be able to see the knot, with the top edges of it under the collar. The collar shouldn’t “gap” from the neck. Furthermore, the back of the jacket should not gap from the collar, unless the characters are doing crazy things with their arms. Point 3 does not apply to people intentionally drawing ill-fitting suits and shitty tie knots. You can skip town now, if you want. That’s the important stuff. Keep reading -- source link
