Charlie Chaplin’s Chubs Series Eric Campbell Chaplin moved on to Mutual Films in 1916, signing the highest contract for any performer ever. Here is where he found his ultimate antagonist in Eric Campbell. Campbell was 6’5” and big all around. He appeared in 11 comedies with Chaplin in 1916 & 1917. These are known as some of Chaplin’s best works and Campbell was becoming a star in his own right. But 1917 was not a good year for Campbell. His wife died of a heart attack in July. His 16yo daughter was seriously injured when she was hit by a car while out buying a dress for mourning. Campbell re-married 2 months later to a known gold-digger, who divorced him 2 months after they were married. Finally, after a Christmas Party, Campbell was killed in a drunken head-on car crash. His ashes were never claimed. -- source link
