Ron adores giving gifts. After he gets his very first paycheck, he goes out and buys Hermione the new annotated edition of Hogwarts: A History. He wraps it clumsily in brown paper, and ties it with a messy bow, and watches as Pigwidgeon hauls it off towards Hogwarts. He sleeps with Hermione’s overjoyed thank you letter under his pillow for a month (not that he would ever admit that, not even under the influence of Veritaserum).Every year, Ron’s Christmas list is at least a yard long. There are gifts for Hermione and the kids of course, and at least one for every member of the always-growing Weasley clan. The former DA members all get something too- a nice bottle of firewhiskey or a not-yet-released Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes product (but only after it has gone through extensive safety testing). There are boxes of fudge or nougat for his former colleagues from the Ministry, tins of cookies for his mates from the weekend Quidditch league, and personalized pint glasses for the regulars at the local pub. These lists take hours, days, weeks even to finalize and put together. After their first year living together, Hermione refuses to ever go holiday shopping with him again. She prefers to pop round quickly and get everything she needs in one fell swoop- the hours that Ron spends poring over different brands of fudge are agony for her.Birthdays are a particular pleasure. Ron spends the months leading up to the big day figuring out exactly what the celebrant wants the most, the thing they themselves might not even know that they want. He delights in their joy, in the gasp of surprise and squeals of happiness that follow the unwrapping. No one has ever seen Ron grin more than when he’s giving someone a gitf he knows they will love. Hermione doesn’t fully understand the reasoning behind Ron’s fervor until shortly after Rose is born. He comes home from the shop one evening with a massive teddy bear in his arms. Hermione is overtired and overworked and the last thing she needs is a three-foot bear in the middle of the living room.“She already has a crib full of stuffed animals!” she grits through clenched teeth. “She doesn’t need another one, let alone one that’s five times her size! Why are you wasting money…”It’s when that last bit comes out that his face falls, that her voice dies in her throat. She forgets, sometimes, that Ron didn’t grow up like she did, like Rose would. She forgets that Ron only ever had the one bear, the one set of robes, the one broken wand and beat-up rat. That he had corned beef sandwiches that he hated, but that he ate because that was all there was. That he would have given anything for a three-foot stuffed animal to call his own. It is the last time she ever accuses him of wasting anything.Source -- source link
