A reasonably popular theory going around at the moment is that there is going to be a new eeveelution announced with the 16th Pokemon movie. While Game Freak does have a habit of announcing new Pokemon far in advance of the new generation of games, if this holds true then Gen VI may not be too far off. With that in mind and on the heels of yesterday’s post about Smash Bros, here are 5 things that I think would make the new generation the best yet. 5. Bring back rematches I can’t for the life of me figure out why this feature was taken out of Gen V (those stupid bloody breeders in Black and White 2 who deem it necessary to constant throw their underleveled Pokemon at you every time you walk past do not count), but one of my favorite parts of Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver was the ability to re-battle the old gym leaders against their new and improved team. Bringing back the Vs Seeker would also be a welcome alternative. It might just be me, but I’ve always liked the idea of the game world growing as I do, and being able to come back and see that Youngster Joey has finally gotten himself a Raticate makes me feel more like I’m a part of a living world than static scenery. Chances of this happening? Actually pretty decent, there’s been enough of a push for this that they might listen. It has appeared in some form or another in most generations, so bringing it back isn’t out of the question at all. 4. Customise your avatar This to me just seems like a basic RPG necessity nowadays. Maybe the likes of Skyrim and Mass Effect have spoiled me into thinking that I can make the hero of the universe into the most oddly proportioned monstrosity ever seen (the ability to modify nostril size is no longer an optional feature for me). Surely it wouldn’t be particularly complicated to give you the ability to change very simple things about your character - even it’s only basic skin tone, hair and clothing colour alterations. Chances of this happening? To be honest, not great. The protagonists of each new generation always have official names and artwork, and while the developers are willing to push new ground in some areas, they seem strangely attached to maintaining some form of canon amongst the player characters. But then again, Commander Shepherd has a canon male and female face, and you can turn him or her into something… interesting 3. Extending pre-existing Pokemon families A lot of the criticism for Gen IV centred on the fact that so many of the new Pokemon it introduced were evolutions or babies of Pokemon from previous families. I thought it was awesome. Watching the forgettable Yanma take a level in badass into the epic pre-historic dragonfly that was Yanmega, or seeing male Kirlia have the chance to strap on a pair of blades as Gallade helped bridge the gap between generations and flesh out the Pokemon universe as a whole. Even baby pokemon, while functionally useless, helped add to the experience of raising a new partner from scratch rather than having a level 1 Pinsir or Druddigon looking like it’s already ready to start wrecking things. Of course, some of the additions didn’t work (I’m sorry Lickylicky, no one will choose you), but overall I thought it was a great idea that has loads of potential. Chances of it happening? It depends on how creative Game Freak is feeling. Gen V brought nothing but brand new families, so I think it’s a fair chance that we’ll be seeing a few old favourites making a comeback with shiny new evolutions. 2. New type combinations This is one of the biggest things that would make the new generation into something amazing for me. I understand that some combinations are almost impossible to implement in a realistic fashion (I don’t see an Ice/Fire or Normal/Ghost showing up any time soon), but I think a few new combinations would be great. Fighting/Flying is the only Flying duo that doesn’t exist yet, and Psychic or Dark could be paired with just about anything with interesting results. It seems like every time they verge on something new and exciting they lose faith. Surskit and Nincada were Bug/Water and Bug/Ground respectively and both evolved into yet another Bug/Flying type (at least Nincada could also evolve into Shedinja). I just think taking some risks in typing could have massive pay-offs if they are willing to take a chance. Chances of this happening? To some extent, definitely. On the other hand, there will unquestionably be some old fallbacks making an appearance. We can absolutely expect that we will have a 3-part bird Pokemon that is Normal/Flying, and Bug/Poison will almost certainly show up at some point. There are likely to be three or four unique types though, and I suppose that will have to do. 1. Something new for a starter trio Grass, Fire, Water. It’s ingrained into every player no matter how experienced that one of these will be your first partner and that your opponent will be a douche and pick whichever gives him an advantage (and I guess poor Bulbasaur just hangs out with Professor Oak until the end of time). But something new could be just enough spice to keep the game from feeling too much like a rehash of previous games. There are almost 10 possible trios that could be used in their place. Psychic, Dark and Fighting would be the best change in my opinion (yes, Dark is immune to Psychic, but it isn’t as if you would use your Grass attacks on a Fire Pokemon if the original combination were preserved) but Flying, Ice, Fighting or Ground, Steel, Ice could also work. Chances of this happening? About as close to zero as you can get. Game Freak has shown one thing above all others - if they’re onto a winning strategy, they aren’t likely to change it. It isn’t a criticism, if you look at their sales they’re clearly doing something right. It’s become such a staple that some fans might see it as an abuse of what they have come to expect. What is slightly more possible is giving them secondary typings that work in opposite synergy to their primary typings. Imagine Houndoom vs Breloom vs Slowbro, each with a type that could counter either of the other two. It would have to be balanced by giving them identical speed stats, but it would add an extra layer to a concept that has become repetitive. At any rate, I’ll just be happy as long as the Fire starter isn’t half Fighting. -- source link
