By fighting for your cause, I will earn the right to be legendaryI have been so excited about being able to send Kane of on his Kiwame journey and the Hakuouki cross-over that I couldn’t help but record all his letters into pictures. I had a lot of fun with these and I once again realized just how much i love painting backgrounds. I also really love Kane’s Kiwame outfit. I definitely realized how much he looks like a proper Shinsengumi warrior now, all dressed for battle (and quite fashionably at that).1st letter - Training with the Shinsengumi (1863)Not much is mentioned in his first letter besides being allowed to train with the Shinsengumi. I imagine he joins them in the very beginning, so he can witness and learn as much as he can.2nd letter - Turning point (1868)I felt the tone of his letter changed quite a lot compared to his first letter. His opening line also suggests that its been a while since he wrote back to Honmaru. He really starts thinking about what it is he went back to the past for, so it’s a bit of a turning point… the biggest turning point in each route in Hakuouki is the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. For the first time the Old Shogunate army is on the loosing side. What does it mean to be a warrior in this changing age?3rd letter - Former master (1869)History recorded the death of the Shinsengumi’s Vice Commander on May 11th, 2nd year of the Meiji era (lunar calendar). As long as the world thinks he did die (thanks, Otori) and the man himself disappears from history, it still means history is protected, right? I’m following Hijikata’s good ending, which is why he survives, but what does that to someone who has only ever heard he perished in battle? *Kane’s western outfit is based on the revue outfit he wore during the 江水散花雪 musical. The head pat is a little nod to the series where Toshi tends to do that with Chizuru a couple of times.4th letter - New Master (2205)New outfit, new resolve. Time to go home. Hijikata and Chizuru now live in a tiny house somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Ezo with a chance of living out the rest of their lives. *There is no 4th letter, but I thought it would be a good way to end this (his Saniwa has been super excited to see him again, after all). Kane dissolving into sakura petals is a little nod to how fans have interpreted Hijikata’s end, but much more joyous. Kane’s pose is inspired by one of the Hijikata bromides for the Hakuouki Shinkai musical - Saitou Hen that took place last month. Full circle. -- source link
