Zainab Bahrani (b.1962) Is an Iraqi born archaeologist who specializes in Mesopotamian monuments and the concept of image in Mesopotamian societies. She is one of the first to publish about about women, gender, and representation in Mesopotamia (portions of the publication can be read here). Bahrani is also interested in cultural preservation and was well as the politics of cultural heritage. In the summer of 2004 Bahrani was Senior Advisor to Iraq’s Ministry of Culture. During that time she conducted a survey of war damage at the archaeological site of Babylon and instigated the state of Iraq’s official request for the removal of the military base from the site.
