I’m standing there with the whistle in my mouth and the drivers eyes are locked with mine
I’m standing there with the whistle in my mouth and the drivers eyes are locked with mine - he knows the time is up, and I’m pushing it. I see someone bearing witness for the first time beside the truck and I let just a few more seconds slip by. I hear a baby cry out from the crates - ten more seconds. A car drives by - five more. A safety marshal looks at me with a questioning gaze - four more seconds. It’s like I’m holding my breath under water - heartbeat pounding in my ears - three more. What if I never moved? Two more. What if I just laid down right now? One more. I scream into the whistle and back away. That’s the feeling that stays with me - the guilt of all the things we really should have done. -- source link
