Be it ever so humble… The blue/nave separate sport coat is truly the short stop of the menswear infield. No amount of emotional scarring from parental overbearing gone awry can stop the inevitable truth that blue is just a damn fine color for the top half. Like the gray trou we started with, a blue sport coat provides a wonderfully neutral canvas on which you can paint your daily masterpiece with shirt, tie and pocket square. That versatility is why the first photo is a fraction of my solid blue rotation. But because neutral can sometimes lend itself to dull, it’s important to vary the variables: change it up with texture (donegal to melange flannel to hopsack or grosgrain and more) Go single or double breast. Change the pockets from jet to flap to patch (even 3patch). Swollen edges on lapels and seams. Etc. Blue sport coats seem to defy the usual rules: generally in menswear darker means more formal, but for the blue sport coat, navy can be worn with chinos just as well as with dark grays. For sure, lighter blue is relatively less formal, but also ironically less versatile. But, more texture is still less formal, and the less visible the pocket the more formal — that much at least is till true. Notice that haven’t said “blazer” once yet. Whether or not anything in menswear can ever be uniformly categorized and defined, it can be said to be generally accepted that a “blazer” is a dark navy separate sport coat characterized by brass or gold buttons. Of all the blue sport coats, the blazer is the most maligned as passé, hardest to wear stylishly and, in my opinion, least versatile. But you need not settle for horn; smoked mother of pearl has a wonderful understated elegance. My blue sport coat lineup is one I’m really proud of. From the sartorial crown jewel, my @sartoria_volpe hopsack 3 patch, to my handful of bespoke @rubinacci_official cashmere semi tweeds, to my bespoke @to my @napolisumisura aqua donegal, it’s hard to know which one I love best.
