folkmagick: THE CAT NIGHTS ARE HERE! We’ve all heard of the Dog Days of Summer, but are you familiar with the Cat Nights? According to that magical treasure-trove of folklore, The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Cat Nights began August 17. This curious calendar entry is steeped in witchy history. Old Irish folklore states that “a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time (August 17), she couldn’t regain her human form.” And as the tales (and tails!) would have it, this is where the idea of of our feline friends having nine lives originates. Cats are also said to be extra meow-y during this time. I’m going to celebrate it as Halloween come early! The Cat Nights are back starting Saturday! (And my little familiar appears to be getting in on the act by being extra vocal already.) -- source link
