figuring out doran’s hair journey…full explanation under the cut but the long bangs are the peak of the “I AM UNWELL” era…garbage fire haircut as self-affirmation/marker of rebellion. <3right so i’m just beginning book 3 and a continuing thing from book 1 is the allusions to a bond between a soulweaver and their spirit ally; these are incredibly strong, a soulweaver’s best friend is usually their soul-ally, and aegis mentions at the start of book 3 that his power has grown while you were frozen because he was able to draw from the magic essence of the ice crystal you were embedded in. AND we know that tomix’s hair and eyes changed after he fucked with (don’t remember the backstory, broken spirit looms perhaps?)on top of that, he mentions that he FELT the moment you became trapped and has been trying to free you (well. him and the rest of battleonia) for the past five years.on top of THAT i want to mention that jaania, while she was frozen, was apparently conscious for the 200 years that passed, and the hero’s dialogue seems to suggest that their situation was the same. ie mind-eroding monotony. right?so all of this lore justification is here to build up to this hairstyle walkthrough =)leftmost is doran at the end of book 2. speaks for itselfnext is just after she’s been unfrozen and found aegis again: the first thing she did after finding her dragon was make for ravenloss and search for aegis. right? and he’s in that grove beneath a proper canopy of those weird glowy eye talismans and they just charge at each other with such force and he (inadvertently) releases such a flurry of ice magic that a half-mile radius of pellow village around them becomes covered with sleet. and doran finds that, in the impact, a part of her hair has become infused with elemental ice. aegis is mortified, but she’s delighted.next, the unwell phase – at some point in the following days and weeks she decides to get a Crisis Haircut (and haven’t we all been there), but she can’t bring herself to cut the strands of ice. so she keeps them, as wonky as it may look. this hairstyle is meant to scream two things, 1) someone loves me. someone was happy enough to see me that they did this. and 2) i ally myself with magic; i forfeit my ability (as a warrior) to pass for a non-magic user. (this one also leads back to aegis, honestly, because if the order of the rose’s policy of arresting magical beings gains momentum, it’ll put him in harm’s way, too)then as for the last one, i dont know anything about what happens in book 3 (YET) but if at any point there’s a chance for doran to take a breather and regain some mental stability, then i think she’d be secure enough to part with most of the enchanted-hair and let a barber fix the mess she’s made lol -- source link
