Ch3: Baron Samedi: When most folks think of Voudou they envision a flamboyant skeletal pimp or red-eyed, evil demon ready to steal your soul. Aside from the red-eyed evil demon part, that’s not a bad descriptor. We know him as Baron Samedi, and though he may be scary to some, we know him as a raunchy, fun-loving spirit who loves children and dispensing justice. When Africans were brought over in bondage during the Transatlantic slave trade, they brought their gods with them. In the New World, their gods were organized according to nachons or nations. Among these nations are the Guede, the family of spirits to which Baron Samedi belongs. Baron Samedi is head of the family of ancestral spirits called Les Morts (the Dead) while Papa Guede presides over the Guede. Baron Samedi stands at the crossroads as the gatekeeper to the Ancestors. He is the all-knowing Spirit of Death, a sexual loa noted for disruption, obscenity, and debauchery. Although he appreciates adult themes, he absolutely loves children and protects them with all his power.
