vivelareine:This Photo is NOT Joseph Souberbielle, surgeon, revolutionary and juror at the trial of Marie AntoinetteThe above photograph has long been identified as Joseph Souberbielle, a surgeon who became an ardent supporter of the revolution and, in relation to this blog, was both a physician to Marie Antoinette in the Conciergerie and would later serve as a juror on her trial. However, the photograph cannot be Souberbielle–and is in fact an entirely different man.On a Twitter thread dissecting the photograph, Alban Pérès pointed out critical information that has long been overlooked in the generally accepted identity of this photograph:1. The photographer, Antoine Trinquart, was not active in Paris until 1858. Souberbielle died in 1846. It is extremely unlikely for Trinquart to have taken this photo, since he was not active as a photographer until more than a decade after Souberbielle’s death.2. A portrait of Souberbielle from 30 years prior shows that he no longer had hair on top of his head; the man in the photograph does.3. The medals worn by the man in the photograph include a Legion of Honor and Order of St. Louis medal. Souberbielle had neither of these medals, and the Order of St. Louis medal would be particularly egregious since he voted for Marie Antoinette’s execution. Souberbielle had the ‘victors of the Bastille’ medal, but the man in the photograph is not wearing it. @EcritsHistoire on Twitter has identified the man as François-Victor Bally (1775-1866) who was a member of the Imperial Academy of Medicine. This would explain the order of Saint-Michel sash and medallion on the bottom left. This photograph in the Bibliothèque de l'Académie nationale de médecine shows Bally as shown in an 1862 volume of members of the Imperial Academy of Medicine. It is the same photographer, clothing, and chair as the “Souberbielle” photo. Therefore, we can safely assume that the man is actually François-Victor Bally, since this identification comes from a volume published with photographs of these Imperial Academy of Medicine members. -- source link
