Junior Officer, 11th Dragoons, 1781. The rosette fashion in which he has tied his sash was just one of the many methods of tying the sash practiced during the latter part of the 18th century. As with many of the more finicky details of uniform, the method of tying appears to have been largely a matte of taste. His waistcoat matches the buff facings of his regimental coat, and is double breasted and ‘boxed’, or without tabs. -- source link
