romegreeceart:Roman civil war commanders - Pompey the Younger (c. 75- April 12, 45 BCE)Hispania greets disembarking Pompey the Younger, coin minted in Hispania in 46/45 BCE), currently at Numismatic collection of Berlin state museumAfter the battle of Thapsus (46 BCE) Pompey the Younger escaped to Hispania together with his brother Sextus Pompeius and Caesar’s former general Titus Labienus. Caesar followed them and the two armies met at the battle of Munda (March 17 45 BCE). The engagement was a total disaster for the optimates since 30000 of their soldiers were killed and all the standards of Pompeian legions were captured. Pompey the Younger and his brother managed to escape once again but from now on the remnants of optimate army were fighting a lost cause. A few weeks later Pompey the Younger made a last stand at battle of Lauro where his troops were defeated by Caesar’s legate Lucius Caesennius Lento.
