#5 Julie Byrne - Not Even HappinessNot Even Happiness is the record that made me stop calling Julie Byrne “What would happen if Cat Power and Grouper were the same person” and start referring to her as just plain ol’ “Julie Byrne.” Part of the reason for that was that the critical praise it received gave her a big push forward in visibility, but another part of it was that it carved out her artistic space. Sure, she’s still got Chan Marshall’s husky, recondite voice, and Liz Harris’s penchant for ambience (if not her fondness for obfuscation), but with the delicate, twangy fingerpicking on “Sleepwalker” and the enveloping new age synths on “I Live Now As A Singer” she is firmly exploring her own part of the countryside. -- source link
