#1 Slowdive - SlowdiveI’m an avowed skeptic when it comes to long-awaited comebacks. The new My Bloody Valentine record left me cold. The new Dr. Dre album made me shrug. And the new season of Arrested Development was just awful. So, know that it’s not nostalgic talking when I say that Slowdive’s self-titled is the best record of the year. What’s even more astonishing is that it’s not just the equal of Souvlaki, but it might be even better? (Check back with me in a few years. I need time to decide for sure.) When fans dream of their favorite group getting back together, this is the sort of record they dream about. But I don’t mean to get hung up on expectations, because this record would be remarkable even uncoupled from Slowdive’s 1990s output. The whirlwind of “Don’t Know Why,” the engulfing wave of “No Longer Making Time,” and the twinkling denouement of “Falling Ashes” are remarkable regardless of their provenance. Take it from someone who went in with ever possible reservation: even if you’ve never heard Slowdive before, you’ll be amazed by this record. -- source link
