WEEK 23-25These past few weeks have been busy! We returned from our brief Spring Break and immediately jumped back into preparing for our Pre-Stress Test, a review with a few faculty from the School of Architecture on Auburn’s main campus. They critique the projects and make sure they’re on track for the real Stress Test in early May. Christian Dagg, David Hinson, and Justin Miller attended and left us all with positive reviews! That following week, Andrew Freear took a break from Boston and was joined by Elena Barthel, Mackenzie Stagg, and Rusty Smith for a visit. We showed them our project’s progress and they gave us a very positive and invigorating review. Our faces were hurting we were smiling so much! Now about our design updates! We chose a screen type… VERTICAL STEEL CABLES!! We chose steel cables because it was the screen option (out of expanded metal, rope, and cables) that best fit our concept of having the vegetation be the screen rather than the structure thats holding the vegetation up as the screen. We will mount them vertically so the facades don’t become four big ladders. Because the privacy conditions are different on each side, we are proposing a datum line that runs eight feet off the ground, a dimension that is tall enough to pass under and block views from the West and North edges of the courtyard. The spacing between the cables will change based on its function to block or allow sun and views. The South, West, and North screens will have dense foliage and smaller spacing between cables below the datum line and wide spaced cables above the datum line to ensure privacy of the courtyard while still letting in sunlight above the datum line. The East screen will be the opposite. The vegetation will provide a more transparent screen below the datum line to blur the line between the main space and the walkway, while above the datum line, the vegetation will be dense to protect the facade of the building from the Sun. We are working towards choosing one or multiple vines to create the screens, and how to detail the cables keeping in mind how the vines will grow. We’re working hard towards having a mock-up very soon! After-all, Stress Test is only three weeks away! -- source link
