It shows the site of the Temple of Artemis Orthia - which was the location for the rite of passage ritual for Sparta ephebes (διαμαστίγωσις / diamastigosis). The ritual, which involved whipping the boys whilst they attempted to steal cheeses, was seen as preparation for life as an adult Spartiate. The ritual was written about by ancient witnesses. There were similar rituals for rites of passage for Spartan girls. -- source link
