Raw garnet on heavy sterling plaque. Garnets are associated with Mars since way back, but what I find more interesting is that too much garnet can kill even the possibility of life. Rocky planets like Earth have a mantle made of olivine. Olivine (peridot) is soft enough that it will flow around tectonic plates, allowing convection in the planets core and thus a magnetic field. Planets without the protection of a magnetic field can’t retain an atmosphere or fend off radiation from their stars. The composition of a planet is dependent upon the composition of its star, and stars with the right amount of magnesium can create planets out of olivine. Stars with a higher level of silicon create planets with a mantle made of garnet. Garnet is much harder than olivine and would lock the planetary crust into a solid plate, effectively blocking the mechanism that creates the potential for life. Kepler 407 is a star orbited by four rocky planets, but it has been ruled out of future habitable planet surveys because its composition indicates that its planets are probably made out of garnet.
