Marilyn Monroe in Korea, February, 1954. She took a short detour of her honeymoon trip to Japan with husband Joe DiMaggio who was there on business to do a little “business” of her own. She was invited to perform for the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who were stationed there during the war, which ended in 1953. But Marilyn had wanted to visit the soldiers long before the opportunity came.In 1952, she said: “After I finish Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, I hope to go to Korea to entertain the troops. I have received so much fan mail from the GIs in Korea that I feel the least I can do is to go over and say ‘hello’ to them in person.”In 1953 she told Louella Parsons she wants to “talk personally to some of those boys who have written me such wonderful letters.”When the opportunity finally same, she traveled with with Jean O’Doul, the wife of Joe’s friend Lefty O’Doul, and she spent four days with her beloved fans. She credited the trip as being one of the highlights of her life. It was a memory not only forever engrained in her, but them as well; even us, fans who warmly appreciate every bit of herself she gave to the public and who love to see her happy. <3 -- source link
