caille:“Isma’il Pasha ordering his chibouque” (1855)Historians believe that none of Roger Fenton’s photographs from the Crimean War can be believed; Fenton had no qualms about moving things around on the field and making gross exaggerations about combat. I’m probably in the minority here, but I don’t mind his blatant inauthenticity. It’s a fine excuse to create your own story about what’s going on in the photograph and the notion of objectivity is overrated anyway.A thousand stories could be written about this one. Were there other Hungarian generals who regularly smoked Ottoman pipes? Some of his attendants are laughing at him — what were they thinking? What in the world was going on outside the frame that everyone is staring at? Did Fenton miss the real story? Copyright Roger Fenton -- source link
