2jam4u:2jam4u:lmao so anyway this ugly ass picture of me is in Marie Claire rn… but also how fucked up is it that a regular Afro protective hairstyle is now ‘fashion plaits’ Gonna say a few things about the Marie Claire feature (bc mostly no ones listening to me lmao):-The photo was taken at Afropunk in 2014. I was 23 and lmao had no idea that if I signed a release it would mean the photographer could do whatever they wanted with the photos. I thought it was just for portfolio/gallery use.-Because the rights to the photos don’t belong to me, I don’t get paid for their use and I don’t have a say where or how often they’re used. Which means I didn’t sign off on this article nor did I sign off for the other magazines and ads that used this pic.-‘fashion plaits’ pisses me off. They’re box braids, get the fuckin name right. At this point, are we even shocked that white people are blatantly exploiting black culture anymore?-My protective styles are kinda my thing and cute as hell, and yes, they’re a trend among black women right now but they’re not a wide scale trend for everyone.-That white person under my picture is white and should keep their grubby paws off black cultural pieces, i.e. box braids.-Yes it’s cool that I’m in a print magazine for the first time but I’m pissed and embarrassed that my photo is being used to exploit black culture and to make every day Afro protective styles look like a trendy superficial thing.End of the day, it happened but there’s nothing I can personally do about it. We can always @ Marie Claire though -- source link
