The lyre - the instrument of professional storytellers, the skalds and the scops of the Anglo-Saxon and Viking Age. Oral traditions, passed down through generations in the firelight of the mead-hall inspired the imagination and rejuvenated the spirit, providing people with a shared history and repertoire of heroic and mythological sagas, poems and stories which over time came to be written down by Christian missionaries in Iceland and across the continent.
