Time to reveal the three new papercraft artworks featured in the Illumicrate Collections box for The Cruel Prince in collaboration with Holly Black! This was such a passion project, and an amazing honor to be included in a masterfully curated box! This was a super fun project and I had an amazing time experimenting with new techniques to feature detailed illustrations in a papercraft setting. I was able to photograph the super crisp silhouettes by illuminating the background with LED lights! The Cruel Prince (gold) cover is probably my favorite of the three. Lots of hidden mild symbolisms for Jude and Cardan. The moth, representing change. Cardan’s bitten everapple; tasting the forbidden fruit. (and stupidly drunk on it) One wing mantle; fallen out of the nest; abandoned. The Wicked King (teal) cover is a great transitional piece. Who is really in control? The power struggle that happens during this book is symbolically shown here: is Jude pulling Cardan down with her? Is she grabbing him for help? Is he trying to stop her? Is he trying to save her?The Queen of Nothing (purple) was a shot in the dark with its symbolisms, (mostly pulled from the cover and with tidbits provided from Illumicrate) as I made it before I read the novel (and boy, did I hit them on the nose!). Jude’s dress comes directly from the book and is inspired by Celtic wedding dresses. I think TFOTA artists are secretly cursing Holly for choosing a snake aesthetic. That darn thing had to be drawn by hand, swirlies and all! Each cover features a hidden creature in the black - can you spot them all? -- source link
