(day 88) Gateway! In 1988 the X-Men moved their headquarters to a remote location in Australia in what is known by fans as The Outback Era. It was during this time that they encountered Gateway, an indigenous Australian man with some really cool powers. In a lot of ways, Gateway is a “noble savage” stereotype, and subsequent X-Men characters like Bishop and Manifold (younger mutants of Aborigine descent) are probably better representation. I mean, Gateway probably isn’t any kid’s favorite character. But I do appreciate the effort Claremont put in to diversifying the Marvel universe, and Gateway is personally responsible for bringing in one of my favorite X-Men recruits: Jubilee! Also: the fan site uncannyxmen.net has been a really useful resource throughout this project. I especially use the “Costumes Gallery” subsection on the character profiles if I’m trying to decide on a particular character’s look for my drawing. But not every character gets one. So I want you to appreciate that someone with a sense of humor actually added a Costumes Gallery section for Gateway, and then left it blank.Uncanny X-Men #230 (June 1988) writer Chris Claremont, penciler Marc Silvestri, inker Joe Rubinstein, colorist Glynis Oliver, letterer Tom Orzechowski, editor Ann Nocenti -- source link
