Bonne Maman, Then/NowThe piece from 2013 was one of the very first food illustrations I created and shared on Tumblr. I still love how it has an airy feel, and a softer color palette. That being said, I remember that the process of making it felt very self-conscious because I was super focused on not making it *too* realistic. I was really inspired by Maira Kalman, and was trying to evoke her whimsical sensibility. It was definitely a significant piece for me, because it helped me realize how much I liked working on little details. It was also the first time I remember using complimentary colors with intention in the shadow areas and in the refracted highlights. Working on the 2019 piece felt a lot more natural because I just followed my usual process and didn’t worry about trying to make it look a certain way. A big technical difference between the two is that back in 2013, I was using colored pencils mainly just for small areas and detail, and in 2019, I’ve used them all over the entire piece, except for the label area. Another big difference is that I’m not as afraid of dark colors as I once was. All in all, this was a really fun piece to recreate and it makes me feel even more warm fuzzies for the 2013. -- source link
