Are they hung up there above your head to stop your imagination or to guide it further and higher? Why do modern artists have to explain their mind at length, while classical art comes without a user manual? Why does modern art want to tell you something, instead of masterfully playing with chiaroscuro and arcane layering techniques? Why did one want to impress while the other tries to guide? When did the concept of art and its role in our lives change, and so dramatically? When did literature and social critique become art? And what’s left of the good old heartwarming happiness in front of a rainy landscape, when did it get substituted by brainy worries about overpopulation or climate change? At least you can have a local Vollenhoven&co Extra Stout right in front of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum and let its crunchy bitter chill calm down your stormy thoughts, and let them find a quieter way, hopefully your way.
