These portraits are just a sample from a larger set by the Japanese woodblock artist Toyohara Kunichika. The full set, titled Thirty-Six Good and Evil Beauties, depicts historical women. These portraits fall into the more general tradition Japanese artistic tradition of bijin-ga (literally: beautiful person picture). However, Kunichika’s imagining of these women breaks from tradition in that he focuses not just on their physical appearance, but also their personalities. Thus, Kunichika’s prints include descriptive text, humanizing these figures, describing them as people rather than historical and gendered archetypes. Images from: Kunichika, Toyohara.
