Simone would have been furious to learn that Robert had spent the night with Gillian, one of the English sisters at the chateau. Her sister Jacqueline would have been angry as well. She thought the French Scholar was very attractive and she found her life at the Chateau more congenial than did the shy Gillian. For Robert, Jacqueline would have spread herself without being tied and would have borne the crop without complaint. Gillian had cried at being tied, pleaded not to be cropped and sobbed during the rough usage that Robert demanded of her. She would have been incredulous that both her sister Jacqueline and even the haughty Simone would have envied her. -- source link
